PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Be a part of the 2 Weeks Special Volunteer and travel Program in Zanzibar and experience the beauty of
the island like never before! This program had been designed for those who wish
to spend a short time in Zanzibar, contributing towards a meaningful social
cause and at the same time explore historical,
natural and cultural sites of island. Participants
shall have the opportunity to
discover Zanzibar and join PDS organization that will offer initiatives to
support the community in need.
This camp will be also part of a cultural exchange project aiming to serve as an important means of introducing people around the world. Participants will get to meet some amazing volunteers from other parts of the world. There will be an immense scope of peer learning and together they can make a big difference to the lives of the people in the rural areas of Zanzibar. It will also be an incredible opportunity for you to know more about life and culture of the locals.

Project Location and socio-economic conditions
Kibele village population of 1,426 is almost half of the “Shehia”
of Tunguu (estimated population: 3,563; male: 1,788; female: 1,775) and about
2% of the Central District (estimated population: 76,346; male: 38,538; female:
37,808). Sex ratio average is 1:1 and household size average at Kibele is 4
persons.
The common food crops grown in the project area include: cassava, yams, banana, paddy, maize, coconut and some vegetables that are mostly consumed within the village. There is no commercial farming as such, but the remaining parts of food crops are sold to nearby villages, especially Tunguu. Only some horticulture products such as tomatoes are sent to Zanzibar town during high productive seasons. During the other seasons, people have to find alternatives to farming, such as petty trade, food vending, limestone quarrying or waste picking.
PROGRAM DETAILS
In every country, Tanzania included, there are unfortunately
many people who have been disadvantaged to sustainable rural community based on
a number of factors like climate change, political situation, economic changes
etc...
PDS provides a Youth Empowerment Program that has been established by community members to address issues affecting them and enhance sustainable living. On the first hand, some cost paid by the participants for the 2-weeks camp will be used to initiate scale industries for the community members (to support microfinance project).On the second hand, the participants of the camp will provide trainings to the PDS students on how they can produce quality products and how to market their products.
The project is divided into 2 major parts and the participants have to choose one of them, BUT they will be allowed to be involved with both parts
Note: Participants shall be required to provide a small contribution on buying local materials to support those programs This contribution will be including in the cost
1ST PART: Youth empowerment in sustainable development
Project Activities
Depending on the skills/interests; participants are
expected to be involved in any of the following activities:
- Production: Volunteers will either train, learn or/and join local community members in production process of a variety of items (homemade soap, clothes making, homemade jam, homemade hot sauce etc…) using local available resources and other woman programs (make-up, painting henna, cake decoration etc…);
- Sports and bonanza activities: Volunteers will work in collaboration with the PDS team to organize sports and other activities for the community members;
- Participating in the establishment/management of the tree nursery;
- Maintenance of the organic vegetable garden (composting activities, education…).
- Organizing educational activities on sustainable living & healthy eating;
- Social inclusion: Participants will work with the PDS team to help in environmental cleaning and to provide environmental skills to the community around.
- PDS Graduation Ceremony. Participants shall have opportunity to join our students celebrating major milestone in their life journey. 100 students shall graduate from different skills program and ready to start their own business.
- 2ND PART: Developing child creativity
Through this 2-weeks camp, we will not only make a brighter
future possible, but we will also create a positive ripple effect on kids'
communities by providing them with empowerment programs that build leadership,
teamwork and confidence.
To make the journey out of poverty, kids first need to
believe that escaping is possible and that they have power over their future.
With your help in this camp, you will open the door of overcoming
disillusionment for kids and you will help them to become empowered citizens
with effective life skills – skills that have a real impact on tackling poverty
in their communities.
Project Activities
Participants are expected to interact with children from the age of
4 to 12 years old in the outlined activities in the PDS Charity School:

Assisting local teachers in delivering some subjects like
numeric, languages (English & Arabic), life skills etc…;

Helping the school
staff in developing curriculum to meet developmental goals and instructional
activities;

Measuring
progress and accomplishments of students towards their academic achievements during
this 2 weeks-camp and providing reports on how to improve according to your
opinion.

Suggesting a
variety of learning materials and resources used in educational activities, observing
and evaluating student's performance and development;

Keeping updated
with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and making
relevant changes to instructional plans and activities;

Working with other volunteers and PDS
members to plan about
establishing PDS Primary School.
Other programs with kids will also be organized:
Indoor and outdoor games that will stimulate learning. Local games will be introduced as well as foreign ones from the volunteers.
Note:
Please bring new games to share with kids
so that at the end of the camp we have learned new games from you.

PDS got
talent program: We will organize talent competition for kids and we will offer
gifts for the winners. Participants will be involved in organizing the competition
and some participants will even have the chance to be judges.

TOUR PROGRAM
Safari Blue
Full day trip
Amazing sea trip to enjoy the blue waters of Zanzibar! You will get on board of a wonderful adventure. First, you will reach a sandbank by boat, where you will be welcome with a coconut drink and exotic fruits. Secondly, back to your boat you will enjoy two snorkeling stops in natural lagoons, with all the equipment provided. Then, your adventure continues in Minai Island, where you will have a delicious lunch with sea food (shrimps, lobster, squid, octopus…) and fries, chicken and rice, salads, vegetables and so on… On your way back, you will be offered soda drinks or water.
Prison Island Tour
Half-day trip
The participants will visit the land of turtoises
of Prison Island by boat from Stonetown. After a guided tour to discover the fascinating
history of the island, you will also have a swimming time on its beautiful
beach with light-blue water.
Spice Tour
Half-day trip
You will
get the opportunity to walk among the most wonderful spices of Zanzibar: cloves,
cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, turmeric, vanilla, nutmeg. The tour of the spice
plantations promise to be amazing. You will understand why Zanzibar is a spice
island.
Sunset Tour
Full day trip
We will start
to relax on one of the most beautiful beach of Zanzibar : Paje Beach. Then,
let’s move to Michamvi beach for swimming and walking and most importantly
witnessing an amazing sunset ever!
GENERAL PARTICIPATION CONDITIONS AND INFORMATION
Potential
candidates of this program are expected to meet the following outlined minimum
conditions:
- Age: 18 years and above. No age limit. Younger Participants can be accepted if they are accompanied by their parents or an authorized guardian(s).
- Families, groups, seniors, couples and participants
with disabilities are encouraged to
join the program. However, they should contact us in advance through their
sponsoring organizations in order to prepare appropriate environments that
fit their special needs.
- Duration of the program: 2 weeks maximum for camp. However, participants can apply for more than 4 weeks to join with a long-time PDS project. Participants are expected to arrive on time and stay up to the end of program.
- Language:
Official languages of the program
are English and Swahili. You do not need to be fluent.
- Visas
& Permits to stay in Tanzania: Program Candidates
need to have appropriate visas to enter the country. The recommended type
is Humanitarian and Charity
Activities Visa (A5) or
Students Volunteering Visa (C2)
for the students. These can be obtained at any boarder entry of Tanzania
including airports or you can apply online. We recommend you to apply
online to be sure you receive the appropriate visa. The price of visa is 50 USD. Invitation
letter might be necessary to get the visa and it will be issued when the
following information are confirmed.

Volunteer Information sheet & Form: Candidates should expect to receive the Volunteer Information sheet, form and invitation letter at least one month before arrival.
Cost: 250$ (non-refundable).
This
price covers:
- The cost of airport pickups on arrival
- Food for 2 weeks (3 meals per day)
- Accommodation during the project
- Running cost of the program to support community member’s participating in different programs.
- 4 tours in touristic areas (Safari Blue, Prison Island, Spice tour and Sunset tour).
Participation fees does NOT cover the cost of:
- Medical/health
services
- All
types of insurances
- Relevant
visas or permits
- Airport
drop off on departure date
- Pocket
money, free/leisure activities and
Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in the common house for PDS Volunteers in Tunguu Zanzibar. Some volunteers might be accommodated with the host families at the Tunguu Community. Participants will have to share private room with other volunteers but every room will have its own birth room. Clean water and electricity will be available.
Food: Food will be provided in a house for PDS volunteers or to the local house depending where volunteer stay. Participants with special dietary requirements should inform us well in advance. Participants are expected to help in preparation of the some meals as a part of exchange.
Arrival: Volunteers will be picked up by PDS member at their arrival at ZANZIBAR’s airport. If you buy a ticket to arrive at Dar Es Salaam’s airport, please note that you will need to reach Zanzibar on your own (by boat/ferry) and that a member of PDS will pick you up at the port.
